PhD Course Scholarship at National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS), Okazaki

Introduction
The Department of Physiological Sciences, University of Advanced Studies (Sokendai) is operated by the National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS) at Okazaki (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/). NIPS consists of 19 divisions dedicated to the study of the physiological functions of living organisms including humans. Research areas cover various physiological sciences including morphology, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular and cellular biology, and information science. Research activities are extensive and comprehensive. Some of our current research involves the molecular structure of ion channels, intracellular dynamics of ions, mechanisms of secretion and cell volume regulation, development and differentiation of neuronal cells, mechanisms of synaptic transmission and neural network formation, and higher brain functions such as processing of sensory information, motor control, learning, and cognition.

To carry out the mission of the institute as a cooperative center for universities and research institutes within and outside Japan, we accept many visiting scientists from all around the world for collaborative projects.
Four types of scholarships are possible at NIPS.

The first type of scholarship is the “University Recommendation” MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.



Each year, at least one “University Recommendation” candidate is selected for the 5-year combined Master’s/Ph.D. program, which starts in October. Please note that this scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with other awards or scholarships. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship should make sure that they discuss their application with their prospective supervisor at NIPS. The MEXT scholarship covers the following:

  • Application fee (30,000 yen)
  • Admission fee (282,000 yen, payable only the first year of study)
  • Annual tuition fee (535,800 yen per year)
  • Return economy-class airfare between Okazaki and the student’s home country
  • Monthly stipend (172,000 yen)

The second type of scholarship is a Seiriken Scholarship.
Exceptional students wishing to enter 5-year and 3-year Ph.D. programs at NIPS are eligible to apply for this type of scholarship. It covers the admission fee and the annual tuition fees for successful applicants. Further information can be obtained from scholar@nips.ac.jp

The third type of scholarship is an “Embassy Recommendation” MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.

Through this system, a certain number of 5-year combined Master’s/Ph.D. scholarships are awarded annually. Applications should be made through Japanese embassies/consulates in the applicant’s home country. (Please note that this application procedure is different from the “University Recommendation” MEXT Scholarships noted above.) Applications are open to candidates of any nationality except Japan, and the scholarship details are the same as those noted above. Eligibility
In general, candidates must have completed (or be expected to obtain before starting study in NIPS) a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university for acceptance into the 5-year combined master’s/Ph.D. Candidates wishing to enter the 3-year program must have completed a master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university. People who currently hold Ph.D. degrees are not eligible for any of the above scholarships.

Candidates must be well prepared for the course for which they are applying within the Department of Physiological Sciences. Those candidates who are not native speakers of English are required by the Board of Graduate Studies to provide the results of an English language test and are expected to meet the following standards of proficiency:

  • TOEFL (paper-based test):
    Minimum overall score of 600, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE).
  • TOEFL (computer-based test):
    Minimum overall score of 250, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the essay writing section of the text.
  • TOEFL (Internet-based test):
    Minimum overall score of 100, with a minimum score of 24 in the writing section of the test.

How to Apply
It is essential to secure appropriate supervision before applying for the above scholarships. Therefore, your first step in applying for a scholarship should be to get in contact with at least one of the professors in NIPS (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/outline/pub/staff.html) to find out about any technical requirements as well as the range and depth of background knowledge that is needed by successful candidates for admission.

After you have made contact with an appropriate supervisor, please ask him/her to send an application form for the “University Recommendation” scholarship to you. Your application form must be completed and returned to the Board by 6 February 2008.

The Board of Graduate Studies at NIPS consults with the professors responsible for determining admission to the University about the respective merits of each applicant. On the basis of that consultation, applicants who are on the shortlist for the “University Recommendation” MEXT Ph.D. Scholarship will be invited to an interview at NIPS in February every year for the Ph.D. Program starting in October of the same year.

PhD Positions and Technical Assistant in Molecular Biology, University of Gottingen

Candidates for PhD student positions and Technical assistant are invited to apply to join the Research Group of Dr. Susana Andrade at the Department of Molecular Structural Biology in Göttingen, Germany. The group is interested in the structural and functional characterization of membrane proteins.

We seek highly motivated, ambitious PhD students and provide a state-of-the-art laboratory in an international environment. Candidates will learn a variety of techniques ranging from molecular biology, bacterial cell culture, protein purification, reconstitution of membrane proteins in proteoliposomes, electrophysiology and fast kinetic measurements, to protein crystallization and structure determination. Previous experience in molecular biology and biochemistry methods will be favorable.

Applicants for Research Technician should have an appropriate degree or technical school training in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related area. Ideal candidates should be motivated, dynamic, willing to learn new techniques and possess excellent organization skills.
All positions are funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) through the Emmy-Noether program. Employment will be according to BAT IIa/2 for PhD students and BAT VIb for the technical assistant.

UK: Two PhD Studentships in Electrical Impedence Tomography, Middlesex University

Two exciting research opportunities are available for highly qualified graduates in engineering, mathematics or physics for further studies leading to the award of the PhD degree. The successful applicants will undertake work on an EPSRC funded project dealing with the development of a novel Electrical Impedance Tomography bio-imaging system for non-invasive monitoring of neonate lung function in Intensive Care Units. The proposed system will provide a non-invasive measure of lung maturity and development, oxygen requirements and lung function, suitable for use in small, unsedated infants. This tool will be routinely used to define the nature and severity of persisting lung disease, and to identify risk factors for developing chronic lung problems.

The project is a collaboration of three universities, Middlesex University, UCL and City University, and will be carried out with the full clinical support of the Portex Anaesthesia, Intensive Therapy and Respiratory Medicine Unit at the world leading children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street, London.

PhD studentship 1 (based at Middlesex University, Ref: MU/EIT1): Reconstruction algorithms. The research will involve the development of Boundary Element and Finite Element methods to improve the forward model. To improve the accuracy and speed of the solution, we will investigate multi-grid solution techniques and the use of deformable forward models to minimise artefact in the reconstructed images. The research will also develop linear and non-linear methods such as the Kalman filter-based approaches and their comparison to classical regularisation-based techniques. In addition, investigation will be made in the use of R/S parameter imaging to extend the algorithms to the multi-frequency domain and optimisation methodology in reconstructing the required image.

PhD studentship 2 (based at Middlesex University, Ref: MU/EIT2): Wearable monitoring devices. This project will involve the development of a wearable monitoring device that allows continuous or intermittent monitoring of physiologic signals is crucial for the advancement of both the diagnosis as well as treatment of neonate respiratory function. The research will involve the investigation of built in sensors to measurement the boundary profile and modelling the boundary shape. The work is particularly suited to applicants with a background in Engineering Design.

We are seeking outstanding, enthusiastic graduates, with a first or upper second class honours degree (first class honours preferred) or equivalent and/or MSc in engineering, mathematic, physics or related disciplines. Experience in numerical modelling, Matlab, or design engineering would be desirable. The studentships are available for a period of three years and will cover full student fees and subsistence expenses.

The three vacancies available to be filled in September offer tenures of ten months, two years and three years. The researcher is expected to carry out fundamental research in Machine Learning and to take an active role in the applied research project which is funding the position.

The Machine Learning Group, ULB is a research group that carries out theoretical research on statistical machine learning, predictive modeling and computational statistics, and takes part in several applied research projects in domains as diverse as data mining, bioinformatics to biomedical engineering and wireless sensor networks.

Position 1 Plant Pathology

The subject of this work is a comprehensive analysis of plant responses to pathogen attack. Within the SFB607 a broad range of host-parasite interactions of woody and herbaceous plants were investigated under different environmental influences. The model PLATHO comprises an allocation module, which can be used to simulate the allocation of resources between growth respectively defence related processes within the plant. This allocation module will be used to identify similarities or differences in resource allocation between the various host-pathogen interactions.

Position 2 Plant Ecology

The subject of this work is an integrative assessment of cost/benefit relation in woody and herbaceous plants. The central aim is whether carbon allocation in plants follows common principles regarding resource uptake, investments, and maintenance. Data for this integrative study come from experiments within SFB 607 under competition, CO2- and O3-influence. Study plants are beech and spruce as well as various herbaceous plants such as grasses, alfalfa and sunflower.

Cranfield University currently have a vacancy for a high-calibre graduate to
undertake an exciting PhD research project in the area of carbon nanotubes
for advanced composites.

The incorporation of carbon nanotubes into epoxy resin matrices for advanced
composites is a highly topical research issue. The development of nanotube
modified polymer matrix composites shows great potential for the enhancement
of mechanical and electrical properties. However, success hinges on the
development of effective and scaleable means of processing these materials.

This project will focus on the filling stage of Resin Transfer Moulding for
the processing of nanotube filled epoxy matrix composites. Modelling of the
chemorheology of the modified resin and its flow during impregnation will be
carried out, alongside characterisation of the interaction of nanotubes with
the fibrous reinforcement. The possibility of enhancing the distribution of
carbon nanoparticles by localised placement and manipulation of the flow
field will also be studied and the potential use of this type of strategy in
a component design/optimisation context will be explored.

The successful applicant will work within the Composites Centre at Cranfield
University, which has extensive experience in the field of thermosetting
resin modification and a growing activity in the area of nanocomposites.
This project is a part of a wider on-going collaboration between the
University researchers and research staff at the BAe SYSTEMS Advanced
Technology Centre in Bristol, UK.

The project will be focused on core data modelling methods and search
algorithms for more efficient and effective content-based visual engines.
This will involve developments of suitable indexing time feature
representation and query time selection schemes for visual data (images and
videos), effective similarity measures and efficient localized k-NN query
processing strategies to minimize search space yet maintaining acceptable
precision. This project will be carried out in the context of the new PHAROS
project, which is a main Integrated Project funded by the EU FP6 in a recent
call on audio-visual search technologies. The methods developed from this
PhD project will be plugged into the FAST search engine and will be
evaluated using not only standard datasets from evaluation conferences such
as TRECvid and ImageCLEF etc., but also the data from PHAROS content
providers.

You should have a strong background in Computer Science or Information
Systems, and must have qualifications of First or upper second class honours
degree or research master degree. Strong programming skills in C/C++ and
Matlab, existing research experience in computer vision,
human-computer-interaction or information retrieval, and international
conference/journal publications would be desirable. This studentship is open
for national and international applicants.

The studentship rate is £12,600 a year.

Robust and autonomous satellites formation flying

Future trend in space science missions is the usage of several spacecraft flying in formation, in order to achieve higher accuracy in Earth and extra solar planetary observations, or higher region coverage when monitoring science data. A ground-based command and control system for relative spacecraft positioning would be very complex and may not provide sufficiently rapid corrective control commands. Thus, the overall focus of this work is to significantly increase the onboard autonomy of the future spacecraft, thereby reducing the ground support required.

As part of our collaborative research work with EADS Astrium, we wish to recruit a research student for a PhD study on robust and autonomous satellites formation flying. The main objective of the proposed research project is to study the formation flying of space vehicles from different perspectives such as navigation, control and fault diagnosis and recovery using robust estimation and control theory. We will investigate decentralized information fusion architecture to enhance the quality of relative pose estimation of the space vehicles.


This estimation will be used as basis to develop a model based fault diagnosis and recovery module to make up for any occurs of faults, which will degenerate the performance of the formation flying setup. Within a larger collaboration we are setting up a new experiment called PIPE for studies on free ions in the soft x-ray region at the storage ring PETRA III in Hamburg funded by the BMBF. PIPE will offer unique possibilities to study atomic, molecular and cluster ions within an ionic beam using different spectroscopic methods.

Focus of the project will be the analysis of the electronic and geometric structure of core level excited transition metal cluster ions depending on the cluster size,using methods as NEXAFS and EXAFS. The applicant will be responsible for the development and setup of the control and vacuum system of PIPE together with the collaboration partners. The work will furthermore include the modification of a cluster source for experiment with PIPE and the first experiment on free, mass selected metal cluster ions.

The departments of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences are currently looking for 2 PhD students (AIO) (f/m) for the High Potential Programme granted by the Utrecht University: Global Change and Hurricanes. The research of the departments is part of the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development and Innovation and of the Organic Geochemistry group from the department of Earth Sciences.

Project description: Global Change and Hurricanes:
If and how global warming affects hurricane activity is a topic of considerable interest and intensive research efforts. The available instrumental record, however, is still too short to document and understand the complex links within the climate system responsible for hurricanes. Only through extending the records beyond the instrumental measurements by paleodata, we can capture the full range of natural variability inherent to the climate system. This allows quantification of the separate effects of changing environmental variables. We aim to construct detailed paleo-records from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico for the past 10.000 years which trace back the conditions within the natural system that trigger intensive hurricane seasons. For the first time, paleo-records of precipitation, vegetation, storm induced runoff and sea surface temperatures will be combined in a modeling environment. Only long-term records integrated by modelling the ocean-atmosphere biosphere system enable the detection of any deviations from the normal state that may consequently be ascribed to ongoing and future human interference with the system.


Paleoecologists and Earth-scientists from the Utrecht University will produce detailed marine and terrestrial proxy data of sea surface temperature (SST), precipitation, CO2, BIT index (influx of organic matter in marine sediments), d18O and vegetation patterns. Environmental scientist will integrate these records through numerical process modelling.

PhD student 1: Sea Surface Temperature and storm detection in the marine realm
Accurate correlation of marine and terrestrial settings is of prime importance for time equivalent documentation of environmental changes and to evaluate the synchronicity of occurring shifts and events. Stable hydrogen isotopes, measured directly on both, leaf fragments from terrestrial sites and from biomarker molecules in marine settings, will be used to establish a robust correlation of the contrasting realms. With the accurate dating of the different sites, we will be able to provide a well-defined timeframe for phases characterized by increased storm activity, allowing the systematic analysis of periodicities and amplitude changes of the natural system. Sea surface temperature will be reconstructed using both well established and newly developed organic geochemical proxies (UK37, TEX86). Major hurricane landfalls induced storm surges will be investigated by looking at their distinct imprints in the sedimentology of the coastal and on-shore environments.

Hurricanes in the wider surroundings of the studied transect will be reconstructed from marine sediments, using state of the art organic geochemical techniques. The stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic signatures of respectively cellulose and leaf waxes will be used to quantify past changes in the strong convection and thus isotopic fractionation caused by hurricane-tied precipitation.

Combining stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in fossil plant organic matter (leaf, wood and biomarker molecules) thus allows detailed reconstruction of past hurricane intensity. The PhD student will be involved in both field work and organic geochemical analyses.

PhD student 2: Ocean-Atmosphere-Biosphere interactions
The paleo-records can be integrated in different models acting on various levels of the coupled ocean-atmosphere-biosphere system. These paleo time-series can be used to directly link increased hurricane intensity, which is reflected by SST and BIT, with the dynamics of vegetation and catastrophic runoff amounts caused by hurricanes. However, several feedback mechanisms between the atmosphere and biosphere need to be included to understand potential nonlinearities between ocean-atmosphere-biosphere systems since they may cause sudden shifts in precipitation, evapo-transpiration/runoff ratios and vegetation. Therefore numerical dynamical models on regional scale need to be used and developed. Inverse modeling, with the paleo-records derived from contrasting environments and based on contrasting biogeochemical and paleobotanical techniques allows us to test the accuracy and information value of the different proxy-data sets.

The PhD student will work together with earth scientists and paleo-ecologists from Utrecht University, who also take part in the High Potential Programme, and with several institutes in Florida. Main task of the candidate is modelling although the candidate will also be involved in field work and lab analyses. The project will lead to a PhD thesis.

Highly motivated candidate with experience in Earth Sciences and a MSc in an appropriate field.

The CMRC is a multidisciplinary scientific research group whose primary objective is to make a significant contribution to the scientific understanding of coastal and marine environments and their management. [Switzerland] PhD Research Studentship in Biostatistics - Swiss Tropical Institute

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the area of spatial statistical modelling applied to mapping schistosomiasis transmission in different settings of Africa. The studentship covers living cost and tuition fees and provides support for 3 years. The starting date is June 1st, 2007 or as soon as possible after that date by negotiation.Appropriate qualifications are either an MSc in Mathematics with a substantial statistical component or in Biology or other related fields followed by postgraduate qualification in Statistics. The successful applicant will register for a PhD degree at the University of Basel. The main objective of the research project is to develop Bayesian statistical methodology for the analysis of non-stationary, geostatistical data collected over a large number of locations. This methodology will be applied to a number of schistosomiasis-related datasets from Africa



  1. to determine behavioural, environmental and socio-economic risk factors related to schistosomiasis transmission, and

In addition PhD candidates will be allocated a personal supervisor during their stay at SPIRIT.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Retinal and Early Eye Development laboratory at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

One of the major themes in our lab is to understand the mechanisms underlying neuronal cell type diversity. A primary focus is on the development of mouse retinal bipolar interneurons, which make up a heterogeneous and functionally complex class of retinal interneurons essential for receiving, processing and transmitting visual signals. We employ a variety of cell and molecular approaches on transgenic and knock-out mouse models.

Our lab is part of the Neuroscience group and Centre for Biomedical Research at the University of Victoria. UV is located on the southernmost tip of the picturesque Vancouver Island and is a short trip to Vancouver and Seattle

thesis of the research project described below. In doing so, you will apply for

Project description. The project is concerned with
the construction of programs of experiments in marketing and industry. These
are used to study the impact of various factors on a response variable. The
settings of the factors are often chosen according to a so-called orthogonal
array. In this project, several methods will be explored to find arrays for
large numbers of factors with various numbers of settings. Also, methods for
arranging these arrays in subsets will be sought. This is because, in marketing
experiments, each respondent has to evaluate a separate subset. In industrial
experiments, subsets are important too, because it is usually only possible to
make small numbers of observations under homogeneous conditions.





Profile and requirements. You have a Masters
degree or equivalent in commercial engineering or a field related to
Mathematics or Statistics. Your teaching and research qualities are compatible

[UK] PhD Studenships in Leukaemia Stem Cell Biology, University of Glasgow

PhD STUDENTSHIP in LEUKAEMIA STEM CELL BIOLOGY

Starting stipend of 13,000 incrementing by 500 annually

You will join the normal and CML stem cell research group to investigate BcrAbl localisation and its relationship to molecularly targeted drug insensitivity in Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) stem cells.

  • CML patients treated with TKI achieve disease control not eradication or cure
  • TKI-insensitive CML stem cells persist (Graham Blood 2002; Jørgensen Blood 2007) and are the probable cause of disease persistence in vivo.
  • BcrAbl localisation (nuclear vs cytoplasmic and actin-bound vs free) has profound effects on the cytotoxicity of TKI.
  • BcrAbl subcellular distribution will be visualised by deconvolution fluorescence microscopy
  • Mechanisms regulating BcrAbl subcellular localisation will be studied by mutation


Supported by Glasgow Royal Infirmary NHS Endowment Fund for 3 years. The award will meet the post-graduate student registration fees.

The Section will relocate to the purpose built Paul OGorman Leukaemia Research Centre - a translational research laboratory for Haemato-oncology at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow. This is the site of a new Regional Cancer Centre that will include the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and associated leukaemia/lymphoma treatment facilities, providing both research and clinical work on one site, close to both the main University campus and the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute for Cancer Research (Director; Dr Karen Vousden).

Requirements
You will be expected to achieve a good honours degree in biological or medical sciences; a post-graduate research degree (MSc / MRes) would be desirable. Molecular biology skills will be a distinct advantage, as well as experience in haematology / oncology, microscopy, tissue / cell culture and working with primary patient material. You must be computer literate with evidence of experience of report writing.
